I
watched the documentary "American Bellydancer"
last weekend. It wasn't very interesting from a dance perspective,
but it was very educational about marketing, music industry jerks, and the
difficulty of simultaneously gaining public notice for and maintaining the
previous meaning of one's dance form. I suppose that applies to any
art form, really. It's worth a watch if your exposure to middle
eastern dance is limited to "I Dream of Jeannie" and the Bellydance
Superstars. If you're interested more about the place of dance
in middle eastern culture, watch the Tunisian film "Satin Rouge" instead.
